Jieun Choi (b. 1992, South Korea) lives and works in Germany. She studied Korean painting at Dongguk University and continued her studies at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe.
Choi’s practice centers on the creation of abstract images that capture the fleeting, ephemeral qualities of a moment. Her work brings together softly contoured figures and abstract environments, forming a distinctive visual language in which her characters inhabit ambiguous, emotionally charged spaces.
Through these compositions, she explores the subtle, almost linguistic nature of the human body—its gestures, tensions, and unspoken expressions. Her paintings are driven by an intuitive and sensorial approach, revealing psychological undercurrents and inner narratives through the gaze and presence of her figures.
Her process moves between abstraction and figuration, unfolding through cycles of construction and dissolution. Unexpected forms and situations emerge, heightening a sense of anticipation, tension, and unresolved pursuit within the work.
Choi invites viewers into a space of intuition and empathy, where meaning is not fixed but felt. By navigating the threshold between the conscious and the unconscious, she constructs open-ended narratives that encourage an active and emotional engagement with the work.
